In this 2008 oral history interview with Brien R. Williams, Richard Norton Smith talks about his time writing speeches for Bob Dole, mistakes made on the campaign trail, and the 1996 Presidential campaign.

Smith was a former speechwriter for Senator Dole. He is also a historian who has written many books on U.S. presidents. He has worked on updating many presidential libraries including the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, Dwight. D. Eisenhower Center, and Gerald R. Ford Museum. He also served as Director of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum. He was Director of the Dole Institute of Politics (2001-2003).
