Mitchell served as a U.S. Senator from Maine (1980-1995). He was Senate Majority Leader (1989-1995). He also served as U.S. Special Envoy for Northern Ireland (1995-2001), and U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace (2009-2011).
