Lighthizer served as the treasurer for the 1996 Dole/Kemp presidential campaign. He also was Chief of Staff of the Senate committee on Finance. He also served as a deputy US Trade Representative during the Reagan Administration and vice chairman of the board of Overseas Private Investment Corporation. He is currently the United States Trade Representative (2017-now).
