In this 2008 oral history interview with Richard Norton Smith, Inouye talks about meeting Senator Dole in the Hart Military Hospital, and specific role of the Senate in government in comparison to the House or the Presidency.

Inouye was the second-longest serving U.S. Senator in history serving from 1963 until his death in 2012. He also served as a U.S. Representative (1959-1963). He also served as a Captain in the U.S. Army during World War II where he and Dole first met and became friends.
